ABB has agreed to charter a new vessel from Aker Solutions for use in subsea cable installation.

The state-of-the-art ship will be equipped to install heavy power cables and subsea umbilicals across long distances. The vessel, to be named Aker Connector, is currently under construction and expected to be operational from 2012.

Under the terms of the agreement, ABB will charter the vessel for 2012 and 2013, with an option to extend the contract for a further three years. In addition to the cable-laying vessel, Aker Solutions will also provide a range of related engineering, project management and installation services for the execution of marine and offshore projects.

“This collaboration will enhance the range of projects we can undertake in the specialized and growing market of subsea power cables,“ said Per Haugland, head of ABB’s Grid Systems business.

For Aker Solutions the agreement means greater visibility with regards to vessel utilisation and associated operations such as engineering, installation planning and execution of the installation activities
